France's Supreme Court Upholds Sarkozy’s 2024 Conviction

(MENAFN) France's supreme court Wednesday confirmed ex-President Nicolas Sarkozy's 2024 guilty verdict for unlawful campaign funding violations tied to his unsuccessful 2012 reelection attempt.

Sarkozy, who led France from 2007 to 2012, was previously found guilty in an unrelated matter involving alleged conspiracies to secure clandestine campaign financing from late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi for his 2007 electoral run. He subsequently championed the NATO-backed military operation that ousted Gaddafi and sent the nation spiraling into disorder.

Wednesday's judgment rejected Sarkozy's challenge to a 2024 ruling that found he concealed extraordinary campaign expenditure overruns during his failed 2012 reelection drive—approaching twice the statutory financing ceiling of €22.5 million ($26 million).

The scandal earned the name "Bygmalion affair" after the events firm that staged lavish political rallies for Sarkozy disguised as party gatherings in a scheme to evade election spending restrictions.

The judicial decision also affirmed Sarkozy's one-year incarceration term, with half suspended, allowing the sentence to be completed at his residence under electronic surveillance.

The Court of Cessation represents the final appeals avenue within France's justice system, meaning Sarkozy has exhausted all legal avenues to challenge the conviction.
