French Far-Left Faces Scrutiny After Student's Death in Lyon
Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-old maths student and nationalist activist, died on Saturday, two days after being assaulted on the street by a group of young men.
State prosecutor Thierry Dran announced Monday that a murder investigation has been launched. He said Deranque was attacked by "at least six" individuals, and the autopsy revealed fatal damage to his skull and brain.
Earlier that week, Deranque had shown support for a hard-right feminist collective, Némésis, which held a small protest against a left-wing politician’s visit to Lyon’s Institute of Political Studies (IEP), also known as Sciences-Po.
Mobile phone footage taken near the protest showed three young men being kicked and punched by a larger group, with one person—believed to be Quentin—remaining on the ground.
According to Dran, an initial confrontation between two groups escalated, and Deranque, along with two other nationalist activists, was cornered by the opposing group after failing to escape.
Ministers from President Macron’s centre-right government blamed “far-left” militants for the attack.
"Manifestly it was the far-left that was at work … This was a mob-killing, with blows that the perpetrators probably did not intend to be fatal," said Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez.
